- What is the SSMU Ski and Snowboard Club and what do you do?
The SSMU Ski and Snowboard club, formerly the McGill Snowboard Club, is the only non-competitive ski or snowboard club at McGill University. We offer our members transportation and discounted lift tickets to local mountains every Saturday and some Sundays throughout the winter season. In addition to regular riding throughout the winter we host a series of events throughout the year including parties, movie screenings and apres-skis!
- Can I join if I'm a beginner?
ABSOLUTELY - in fact, every January we'll be hosting 1-2 "buddy" days, where club executives and members that are expert skiers/snowboarders will take a group of students wanting to learn how to ski or snowboard, and will teach them for half the day, free of charge. We'll also be trying to organize deals with ski mountains for groups who want to take paid lessons.
- How can the club be reached?

- Why should I join the club?
The SSMU Ski & Snowboard Club offers the cheapest means to go skiing each week for anyone stranded in Montreal without a car. Due to our significant size we are able to secure the cheapest lift ticket deal with the best mountains in the area. As a result we can choose the hill with the best snow on a weekly basis to ensue that you never miss the fresh powder.
- Do I have to be a McGill student to join?
No! We had over 700 members last year, many who were not McGill students.
- How do I join the club?
Go to the membership page and click the "Buy Now" button to pay for your membership, be sure to enter in your full name so we know who to approve. Then click the "Register" button to create a website account. Your account will be approved once we verify your payment. Once your account is approved you will have access to the Trips page and be able to sign up for trips.
- How much is a membership?
A membership is $103 before November 1st and $110 after November 1st.
- Do you pick up students from Macdonald Campus?
No, we do not pick up students from Macdonald Campus.
- When do trips start?
If conditions allow us, we try and do a trip or two before fall semester exams. Otherwise, we start the weekend after Christmas break. We are now hosting trips both Saturday and sometimes Sunday for more downhill fun and convenience!
- How do I cancel a registration?
Unfortunately we do not allow for trip cancellation as tickets are non-refundable. If you are unable to go on a trip that you are registered for, you can transfer the trip to someone else that IS A MEMBER ONLY by giving them your ticket code. - What is the typical schedule for a weekend day trip?
Buses line up along 555 Sherbrooke [in front of the Music Library] and typically depart between 5:30-7:30AM. The exact time is specified when the trip is posted. If you are late in the morning we will not wait for you so be sure to be there on time! We try to schedule to arrive at the hill between 8:30-9:30AM. Typical departure time from the hill is between 3:30-5:00PM in order to arrive back at the city between 6:00-8:00PM. Please note that if you are late/make the bus wait for any departure time, a $15 penalty fee will be applied to your account which will inhibit any future trip sign ups until paid. Once the departure time occurs, all busses will leave and any whom did not make it will be left behind.
- What happens if I miss a trip?
If you register for a day trip but fail to show up on the morning of the trip, you will unfortunately NOT be able to claim a refund. Demand for the club this season has surged and we have deemed that missing a trip is unfair to other members who could have taken your place. Our goal as a club is to provide as much skiing as possible to as many people as possible. Missing a trip means that there is one less member who could have skied that weekend. However, under exceptional circumstances refunds will be made. Please contact the club via email or Facebook to discuss this. If you want to cancel your ticket before the day of the trip this can be done and refunds will be made with you incurring a $15 processing fee. Refunds are done electronically 1-3 days after the day of the trip. A confirmation email will be sent to you once your refund has been issued. If you register for an overnight trip and fail to show up at the scheduled time of departure, you will not be reimbursed at all.
- Can I bring a friend that isn't a club member?
Yes! We allow up to 3 guests to accompany you per trip. You receive one free guess pass each season to bring someone at the same price that a member pays. After that, any additional guests must pay an additional $30 for transportation.
- If I forgot to sign up in time before the trip sells out and or the Wednesday morning deadline, is it still possible to come on that weekends trip?
Possibly! It is possible that we leave the trip open for registration after our Wednesday @ 11AM deadline, depending on how full the busses are. However, in order to guarantee yourself a spot you must register AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Demand for the club has risen and there is a chance the trip sells out before our scheduled 11AM Wednesday deadline - we recommend buying tickets ASAP in order to ensure a spot for the weekend.
- Can I attend a trip if I am not a member?
You can only attend trips if you are a member or guest of a member.
- Does the club provide rentals?
No the club does not, we suggest you check Poubelle du Ski, as they are the cheapest rental shop in Montreal. Check out the rental equipment page.
- "I can't see the trips page and I couldn't buy a lift ticket in time."
Upon purchasing a membership, the execs who run the club must manually approve each member, resulting in a small delay between when you buy your membership and when you are officially a club member. We ask for this reason if you plan to purchase a ticket for a trip that week and are just becoming a member, make sure you purchase your membership IN ADVANCE. We try our best to approve members as quickly as possible but the club is not at fault if you are unable to purchase your ticket for that week's ski trip due to buying a membership right before the trip deadline.
